Student tenants in Bedfordshire are being urged by police to ask their landlords to fit extra security devices after a series of break-ins.
Tenants who rent flats from private landlords in Luton have suffered a series of burglaries within the first few days of the new academic year, reports Bedford Today.
Shared houses, flats and bedsits are being targeted by thieves, particularly in the town centre. This has prompted local police to urge students to check what security measures are in place as part of the tenancy agreement.
PC Glyn Price told the newspaper: "I have been round several shared houses recently that only have a simple lock on the front door, which is easily broken.
"Tenants must insist on landlords fitting extra security devices so that where they live is as secure as possible."
About 90 per cent of university students will live in private rental accommodation at some point in their studies, according to the National Landlords Association.

Cover your personal effects and protect your accommodation deposit if you cause any damage to your landlords property / possessions.
